BCDLAA Executive – Director

I started my teaching career in 1997 as a secondary school Biology teacher in the Sooke school district. I have always loved working with students who didn’t quite fit in the ‘school friendly’ box. My journey towards distributed learning started when I took over a self paced science/math program at Belmont Secondary School. Teaching 9+ different self paced courses to full classes of students at the same time leads one to look for different ways to help kids be successful. This search brought me to experimenting with Moodle and setting up a blended learning option for the self paced science courses. In the summer of 2001 I started the Masters of Distributed Learning program at Royal Roads University and completed my MADL in 2003.

My entry into administration was in 2011 when I became the Vice-Principal of WestShore Centre for Learning & Training. The WestShore umbrella of schools includes Juan de Fuca Distributed Learning, BYTE Alternate School and WestShore Continuing Education. This is my third year as the Principal of Distributed Learning & Adult Education for SD62 (JDFDL & WestShore). Although I no longer wear the official hat of Alternate Education, I still run a small Alt Ed program in my building for grade 8’s as well as a few other students who need something different than our district’s other Alt Ed campuses are able to offer. I love the opportunities for flexibility, creative problem solving and unique individualized educational programs that DL/CE/Alt allow us to provide to students and look forward to this year’s adventures and opportunities for learning.
